A Simple Solution To Complex Problems
You are the personal representative of an estate in probate, and you have been empowered by the court to sell the house on the open market. Another one of your duties is to make provisions to distribute or dispose of any personal property remaining in the house. It’s more likely than not that you’ve been asked to assume the role of personal representative because the deceased trusts you to carry out, to the best of your ability, the terms and conditions he or she has laid out in a last will and testament.
In many ways having been asked to oversee the disposition of someone’s assets after they have passed away is quite an honor. However, it could also feel like the equivalent of having another full-time job dropped on your shoulders when you least expect it. And while you may have the opportunity to bill the estate for the hours that you spend working on this project, or you receive a certain monthly stipend according to the terms of the will, it is not about the money.
The position of Personal Representative can be fraught with emotional dynamics, where the relationships between the heirs who have been named in the will, and those people who think they should have been named, can spin out of control. And you may well find yourself at the center of the storm, trying your utmost to keep the peace. Besides, depending on how close you were to the person who passed away, you are most likely riding your own emotional roller coaster.
So, those times you begin to feel guilty because you find yourself thinking that you would really like it all to go away, are quite normal and completely understandable. This is especially true if there is a home that needs to be sold as a condition of settling the estate. Approximately 80% of the cases that find their way into probate court call for a home to be sold, and the contents therein to be accounted for, and either sold, or distributed in such a way as to be the most beneficial to the estate. This is a TON of work that is fraught with more headaches than you can imagine!
Thankfully, the myth of Aladdin’s Lamp isn’t such a myth after all. And to your eternal relief, there is a very easy solution available to you. It is the solution that does indeed, MAKE IT ALL GO AWAY! Unlike Aladdin, you don’t have to stumble upon a rust-encrusted and dust-covered, dirty old lamp that someone threw out in the trash last week. As the story goes, all you need to do is rub the thing three times, instead of putting on a pair of latex gloves before you pick it up and toss it right back into the trash heap from which it was regurgitated, and a friendly Genie will appear that grants you 3 wishes.
By the way, why is this thing that doesn’t look anything like a lamp, even called a lamp? I’m talking about something that one would reasonably expect to have a wick along which flows a small and steady supply of combustible fluid, so that when said wick is introduced to a source of flame, it will be ignited, and illuminate a particular space until the fuel runs out. No, every time I’ve ever seen an illustration of Aladdin’s Lamp; it has a handle; it has a spout; and it has a cover; all of which makes it appear to be a receptacle for hot water which is then poured into a teacup. I don’t think they had instant coffee in those days, but I digress.
