George Wallace’s Story
To Thine Own Self Be True
I had my last drink of alcohol on June 6, 1983, as the result of an inspiration I had no way of anticipating. It was (I think) the first of many life changing inspirations that have erupted from deep inside my core and was so powerful I simply couldn’t ignore it. In the mid ‘80’s I found a book called: “You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought” by Peter McWilliams and Jon Roger.
This book helped me to train my mind to eliminate negativity, while realizing all that truly exists are opportunities and possibilities. I also followed a powerful exercise that McWilliams devised to help people find their purpose in life, something I whole-heartedly recommend. I discovered that my personal purpose is to Learn, Grow, Teach, and Make a Difference in the World, which remains as much a part of me today as it was then.
My experience in Real Estate began when I bought a 3-decker in Dorchester at the age of 26, and I had no idea what I was doing. Interest rates were north of 14.5%, and I thought I was making an amazing deal, which was true. If the rate went up, I made a great deal. If they went down, I made a great deal! Therefore, I couldn’t lose, no matter what! It was rue then and it is true now, because truth is true, there are no degrees or caveats. That first three-decker turned into several properties, which I owned while working as an outside Sales Rep for the Largest Paper Merchant in New England.
I attended the evening MBA program at Babson College, started a highly successful Printing Company from scratch, and followed that by founding an Award-Winning Marketing and Advertising Agency that I sold a few years ago. I was honored when I returned to the Babson College Evening Graduate School as a guest instructor in Marketing. And the book I wrote: “How To Enjoy Peace In Your Life Every Day” is as relevant today as it was when I wrote it in 2004-2005. I am now working on a new edition, as well as several e-book titles.
As a student of “A Course In Miracles” since 1994, I’ve substantially grown mentally and spiritually by learning that the only thing I have control over is my own thinking. That feelings follow thoughts and behavior follows feelings. I often refer to The Course as “The 12 Steps goes to graduate school,” because it helped me to significantly enhance my understanding of the 12 Step concepts and taught me that I could change the quality of my life simply by changing my thoughts.
My Purpose co-exists quite nicely with my overall lifelong goal of Becoming The Person God Originally Intended Me To Be. I can honestly say that my goal and purpose permeate every aspect of my life and dictate everything I do. I bring it everywhere I go and infuse it into everything I do, both on a personal and business level.
I‘ve been an Age Group Triathlete and a Marathon Swimmer. I served on many Non-Profit Boards and enjoyed the amazing gift of being a Big Brother in the Big Brother Association of Greater Boston for 10 years, possibly the longest match in the history of the agency. And it was a particular honor to have Eddie serve as the Best Man in my wedding.
Everything I’ve experienced has contributed to the man I am today. I understand that if I want to keep something I need to give it away, that my job is to work for the Greater Good of everyone concerned, and the only way I can get where I want to go, is by helping you get where you want to go, no matter what form that may take. Therefore, it really is…
...All About You!
Our Legacies Lie In The Stories We Leave
I am blessed to have lived a most fascinating and adventure-filled life, featuring amazing highs and bottomless lows. Through it all, I have constantly pushed myself to learn from whatever experience I was having, and I have remained dedicated to active personal and spiritual growth.
Something I have learned that is of particular importance to everyone, is that we are much more than we could possibly imagine. And just as you seem to reach a point you don’t think you can go any further, there is even more light ahead and you can keep on going, becoming more of who you really are, never reaching the end of the journey, because it doesn’t have an end.
The only thing that can get in the way of this process is our own thinking, which generally comes in the form of excuses – reasons why something can’t be done, because they are much more prevalent and easier to access, than deciding to move ahead and finding the ways to do it. Such thinking is a default mechanism to the point where we may not even be aware that we are doing it.
That is why we must be most vigilant for such thoughts that have the power to stop an inspiration before it even begins to take shape. Everyone will be familiar with thoughts such as, “I’ve never done that before. What would my friends or family think of me? I can’t afford to do that. Or I’m wat too busy to fit something like that into my schedule.” All of them are lies we tell ourselves, and they are so habitual we don’t even know they are going across our minds, blocking us from the goals and dreams that live in our hearts and souls.
I know of what I speak because I have lived it. After all, I’m no different from anyone else on earth. That’s how I’ve learned that we are the only ones that can make ourselves do or not do anything. And all of that begins with a decision that is driven by our own unique thought process. The bottom line is that we can do anything we want, or not. And whether we take the action we most wish to take or not, is entirely up to us. We get to decide.
